History

Established in 1982, the Governor’s Arts Awards recognize artists, arts organizations and patrons who have displayed excellence in the arts and outstanding service to the arts in Wyoming. These awards were first made possible by an endowment from the Union Pacific Foundation in honor of Mrs. John U. Loomis, a life-long patron of the arts. Over the years, individuals and organizations from more than 20 Wyoming communities and state-wide organizations have been honored for their dedication to the arts in Wyoming.

Over 450 arts enthusiasts from all over the State joined Governor Matthew Mead and the Wyoming Arts Council in honoring the 2010 recipients of the Governor’s Arts Awards at the 29th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards dinner and ceremony in Cheyenne in February. The recipients are individuals or organizations that dedicate their time, talent, passion and/or financial support to Wyoming’s culture, as well as to the arts in everyday life.
This was Governor Mead’s first GAA ceremony and he spoke enthusiastically about the arts and what they mean for Wyoming. He said of the 2010 recipients, “Each has demonstrated a commitment to helping the arts thrive in Wyoming.”
The evening’s program included the State of the Arts In Wyoming address by Governor Mead, the award ceremony, music by the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Cowboy Band, a reading by Robert Roripaugh – poet laureate of Wyoming 1995-2002, and a special presentation to Bruni Naylor, calligraphy artist, in honor of her exquisite hand-lettering of the Governor’s Arts Awards proclamation over many years. A reception for the awardees and sponsors and a Social Hour preceded the dinner and ceremony.
