Deadline is Sept. 1 for Wyoming Arts Council Mentoring Project Grants

The Wyoming Arts Council welcomes new applications for the 2018 Folk & Traditional Arts Mentoring Project Grants. The deadline is Sept. 1.

Project grants are designed to support the transmission of Wyoming’s finest traditional and folk skills through the natural process of in-person, hands-on instruction. A master artist selects a worthy apprentice to mentor over time in order to advance the skills of the student from proficient to excellent. All traditional art forms (music, dance, craft, etc.) are encouraged.

Projects can run January through October annually and for no less than six months. The grant amount is $3,000 ($2,300 for master honorarium and $700 for materials and/or travel). In 2018, up to four projects will be selected for funding. Applications are made jointly between master and apprentice.

To give applicants an idea of what kind of projects are funded, here are details about the 2017 Mentoring Project Grant recipients.

Wayland Bonatsie is teaching Quinton Hernandez (both of Crowheart) the responsibilities of becoming a lead singer for an Eastern Shoshone drum group. Marcus Dewey (St. Stephens) is teaching Carrie White Antelope (Ft. Washakie) the Northern Cheyenne style of beadwork. Leane Linnell (Lander) is teaching Brook Miller (Shoshoni) the art of horsehair hitching.
