Wyoming Poetry Out Loud champ rehearses for national finals in Washington, D.C.

Wyoming Poetry Out Loud champion Sara Ellingrod (shown in photo above), a student at Arvada-Clearmont High School, is coached on March 18 by poet Jim Coppoc, who teaches at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Also in the photo is Sara’s teacher, Linda Crawford. Sara will be rehearsing poems for the next month in preparation for the national Poetry Out Loud finals in Washington, D.C., April 29-30. Sara competed against 12 other students at the state finals in Cheyenne on March 4, winning a $200 prize and $500 worth of poetry books for her school library. More than $50,000 in scholarship money is at stake at the national finals, attended by students from 53 states and territories. The Wyoming Arts Council is in charge of the state competition. The Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts oversee the national program. Go here for more information.
