This call comes from WAC arts specialist and folklorist Anne Hatch:
“Art of the Hunt” is a research project to gather and document the traditions, stories, and skills of hunters and anglers in Wyoming. The focus of the project is understanding and celebrating the deep-rooted family and community traditions around hunting and fishing, locating the makers of hand-crafted gear such as bamboo fly rods, pack saddles, engraved guns, and taxidermy, and recognizing the ways these sports are integrated into everyday life. Over five years of fieldwork, interviews, and documentary photography have already been accomplished, and we have just begun the fabrication phase for an exhibit that will open at the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne in June 2014. The project is sponsored by the University of Wyoming American Studies Program, the Wyoming Arts Council, and the Wyoming State Museum.
The exhibit includes a scrapbook of historic images from the Wyoming State Archives, so we want to have a bragging board and scrap book of contemporary images — including camp scenes, hero shots, atvs, pack strings, etc., from all hunting/fishing experiences and all ages.
We are also interested in collecting recipes for game meats and fish as part of the project, and want to include a number of them in a “menu” that will be part of the exhibit and on our website. We especially want recipes that have been passed down in families and among friends, and the stories that accompany them—how they were devised, who makes them, memorable meals, etc.
If you are willing to share your images, or recipes and stories, please email them to anne.hatch@wyo.gov by 5 p.m. on March 28. Please include your name and contact information so we can follow up if your image or recipe is selected for the exhibit.
