Artists Announced for Two Art in Public Buildings Projects

Artists have been selected for two Art in Public Buildings Projects, one at the University of Wyoming and the second in Casper, the Wyoming Arts Council announced.

Ben Butler from Memphis, Tenn. has been selected to create two site-specific works for the interior of the Science Initiative Building on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie.

Butler will work with faculty, staff, and students to gather data points and information about their research and projects to create two abstract sculptures. Both pieces will be built from hundreds of wood pieces, which will complement the architecture and design elements of the building. “Connectome” is a wall installation that will span multiple levels and “Cloud Morphology” is a ceiling-mounted piece.

 

 

“Past and Future Frames” is a large scale, outdoor installation that combines wood and steel frames. The piece references the site of the building, which is the former site of the CNW (Chicago and Northwestern Rail) rail yard and roundhouse, and connects to the industrial themes of the building’s architecture. The piece will be situated outside the building and will connect with Casper’s Rail Trail.

The Wyoming Arts Council is responsible for the implementation of the Art in Public Buildings (APB) legislation for the State of Wyoming. Selection processes for APB projects are independent of each other.  Each project has a unique committee comprised a representative from the building occupant agency, the architect and contractor, or his/her representative, arts professionals, and community members.
