Artists and/or artist groups are asked to submit qualifications to design permanent outdoor artwork(s) for the University of Wyoming Biodiversity Institute, located in Laramie. Final selected artwork(s) will reflect cultural and scientific concepts and values surrounding Wyoming’s biological diversity.

The University of Wyoming’s Biodiversity Institute was established in 2012, with the purpose of providing a prestigious center for the study of biodiversity science and the interplay between society and the biological diversity of the natural world. The Biodiversity Institute is the first broad-scale entity at the University of Wyoming and in the state to promote research, education and public engagement around biological diversity in all of its forms and on all scales, from microbes to poetry and ecosystems to economics. To achieve its goals, the Institute supports biodiversity research through grants to scientists and artists, and through publications, public events, and educational opportunities for adults and students, pre-kindergarten through college.

The selection committee will choose up to ten artists or artist groups to develop and submit conceptual designs. A $500 stipend will be provided for this purpose. Artists will be invited to Laramie to present the proposed concepts to the committee; travel will be paid. University regulations require that all public art be reviewed by the President’s Public Art Committee and approved by the president. The policy can be viewed here. The selection committee is an advisory committee to the Director of the Biodiversity Institute.
