Casper College fall OLLI courses include “Zorba the Greek” with George Vlastos

From a Casper College press release:

The “Fabulous Fall Sign-Up” for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Casper College will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Gateway Building.

“We have put together more than 50 offerings, including four that will be filled through lottery, for the fall semester,” said Karen Arnold, lifelong learning specialist. The schedule includes classes held during the day and evening, as well as classes involving travel.

New classes to the schedule include “An Alaskan Photo Diary,” “Bridge for Your Brain,” “Don’t Get Scammed,” “Heart of Wyoming,” “History of Thanksgiving in America,” “Intentional Landscapes and Gardens: Planning the Project,” “Kriti Klasiki Cuisine,” “Pirates!,” “Salem Witch Trials,” and more.

Returning favorites include two movie classes: “What Price Fame” and “Bond, James Bond: Classic Films;” four new meditative drawing classes: “American Indian Inspirations,” “Zorba_the_Greek_posterDr. Seuss Inspirations,” “European Inspirations,” and “Tangled Garden Inspirations;” “Older Than Dirt;” and three book/film classes: “Shakespeare and a Movie: ‘Othello,’” “Shakespeare and a Movie: ‘Twelfth Night,’” and “Spies Who Came in From the Cold War,” and many others.

The popular “Dinner and Movie” will return with a new instructor, George Vlastos, who will host “Zorba the Greek.” “George has studied both the film and the novel,” said Arnold. “The film was shot in his grandmother’s village on the island of Crete, and we will hear George’s unique impressions of this film and enjoy a wonderful Greek meal.”

The lottery portion of registration will be for four fall trips. “We have done lotteries in the past, and find it to be the fairest way to handle what we believe will be very popular trips,” Arnold noted. Participants for the four trips, “Autumn in Wyoming Field Adventure,” “Tour de Absaroka,” “Traveling the Trails: Independence Rock,” and “Traveling the Trails: Martin’s Cove,” will be determined by drawing. The lottery will open during registration on August 27 and close on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at noon.

The OLLI Fabulous Fall Sign Up will be held in the Chapman Lobby located on the second floor of the Nolte Gateway Center on the Casper College campus. “Registration numbers will be given out beginning at 3:30 p.m.,” said Arnold. For those unable to attend the sign up, registrations will be taken by phone or in person after August 27. To register by phone, members may call Arnold at 307-268-2099 or Vicki Pollock, lifelong learning specialist, at 307-268-2097. The OLLI office is located in Room 408B in the Gateway Building for those wishing to register in person.
