Chris Dacre gallery talk and reception set for Feb. 19-20 in Laramie

The work of Denver artist Chris Dacre is featured in an original exhibition, “Crossing the Delaware Line,” through March 20 in the Visual Arts Gallery located in the University of Wyoming’s Visual Arts Building at the corner of 22nd and Willett Drive.

Dacre will present a gallery talk Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Visual Arts Gallery. The opening reception for “Crossing the Delaware Line” is Feb. 20 from 6-8 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building lobby.

Dacre uses his experience from an eight-year stint in the Air Force as a jumping-off point for his artwork that critiques the military-industrial-entertainment complex. Although his content addresses serious issues related to the war machine, he uses humor to soften it, allowing for a deeper discussion to take place within his large-scale, multimedia installations.

“Crossing the Delaware Line” uses the famous painting of “George Washington Crossing the Delaware” and turns it into a three-dimensional version using Dacre’s own cast of characters made from surplus uniforms and secondhand clothing.

Trained as a printmaker, Dacre uses a multitude of media — sculpture, video, audio, sewing and printmaking — to help in his dissection of the political complexities that surround war.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The Visual Arts Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
