--------- OUR STORY ---------
The idea for Alchemy first came to be after Studio 320 artist studio space, located in the alley of 320 Main St., was developed. Working artists renting space in Studio 320 were sitting on inventory and began talking about a retail space. They looked at the numbers and came up with a cooperative model. It could work!
The pioneer group of artists (Lennie Poitras, Dannine Donaho, Mary Haper, Deb Britt, and Jeni VanderVoet) recruited 7 additional artists.
Alchemy opened doors November 6, 2015 in order to partner with the Lander Art Center Native Show on the same night. The store has been welcomed warmly by the community. And though open only one month prior to the holiday season, had encouraging sales.
Currently the 13 member artists meet monthly to continue to work out policies, structure, responsibilities, and accounting. Each artist pays a $300 buy-in and then $60 per month. Artists also work a minimum of 12 hours a month. Artists receive 95% of their sales, aside from credit card fees. Original work is preferred with exceptions being made for greeting cards.
Current Alchemy artists are Lennie Poitras, Rosie Ratigan, Shawna Pickinpaugh, Melissa Strickler, Joel Newquist, Bill Yankee, Noelle Weimann Van Dijk, Stephanie Harris, Mary Haper, Deb Zelenak, Lori Hunter, Laura Norman and Scott Copeland.
Alchemy artists value handmade original arts and crafts, strength in numbers, working together, shopping local and community involvement.
