Juan Laden "Roadside Memorials" exhibit featured at Folklore in Lander

Here’s a message from Lander photographer Juan Laden about his most recent exhibit:

I just wanted to let you know that my show, “Passing Memories, Descansos, Roadside Memorials of the West” which showed last winter in Skive, Denmark, and has done some touring in Wyoming is now showing at the Folklore, a coffee shop at 379 Main in Lander. The exhibit will be up until Nov. 9.

This show is especially poignant, since it was announced on Wyoming Public Radio on Oct. 4 that WYDOT will be removing approximately 300 of these memorials on the highways around the State. These “folk art” memorials that have seen an increase over the last 10 years, have been made illegal by WYDOT back in 2003. They gave a five-year adjustment time and now they will be actively removing them.

About Juan Laden: This show has been a project for the last 10 years of Juan Laden’s, a fine-art photographer (in the old style “wet photography” using film and printing in a dark room). Juan is located in Lander, but had traveled extensively over three continents and has been creating photo images since the 1960s. This is an ongoing project and, as the conditions prevail, will become to some extent, a historical collection.
