Gagok, one of the oldest traditional Korean song forms, will be performed when the University of Wyoming hosts a traditional Korean musical ensemble Nov. 10-11.
The group Gagok JeonSooGwan will perform at the UW Fine Arts concert hall Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m., with a reception following in the Fine Arts lobby. Both the concert and reception are free and open to the public.
A workshop to learn to play the danso, a Korean bamboo flute, will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. in Room 128 of the Fine Arts Center. No special musical knowledge is required to participate in this free event and all ages are welcome. Participants must register in advance by calling (307) 766-2512 or e-mailing rgarnett@uwyo.edu.
Soonja Cho, a designated master of Gagok, will lead the ensemble of 15 instrumental and vocal musicians. Gagok JeonSooGwan’s concert at UW represents Cho’s debut in the United States.
The event is sponsored by the UW Department of Music, UW Office of International Programs, Studies Scholars Lecture Series, UW Korean Student Association, ASUW, Wyoming Arts Council, Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration.
