Lynne Swanson brings to life early 20th century Wyoming librarian Mabel Wilkinson on Thursday May 13 at the Wyoming State Museum.
Swanson’s talk, “My Horse, My Gun, My Libraries,” is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council and sponsored by the Wyoming State Museum and State Museum Volunteers.
The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the State Museum’s Multi-Purpose Room. The event is free and open to the public.
In February 1915, Mabel Wilkinson, a young, highly trained librarian was hired by the Wheatland Library Association to organize their county library and plan for expansion work. Later, she worked for the Park County Library in Cody after answering the advertisement that stated, “Wanted: a young woman who is not only a college graduate with library school training and experience, but in addition must be able to get along with Western people, ride and drive, as well as pack a horse, follow a trail, shoot straight, run an automobile, and be able to ‘rough it’ whenever necessary.”
Swanson is a retired librarian who now devotes her time to researching western women. She lives in Cheyenne.
“My Horse, My Gun, My Libraries” is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council as part of its 2010 Humanities Forum.
The Wyoming Humanities Council provides public humanities-based programs in partnership with local organizations and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
