Nature and travel writer Kurt Caswell to judge Blanchan & Doubleday writing competitions

We thought you’d like to know more about Kurt Caswell, the judge for this year’s Blanchan and Doubleday writing awards. Here’s Kurt’s bio:

Kurt Caswell was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and grew up in the Cascade Range in Oregon. He has lived in Idaho off and on since 1987. He has worked as a teacher in Hokkaido, Japan, on the Navajo Reservation, and at schools in Arizona, California, and Wyoming. He holds an MA in English from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College, and an MFA in literature and creative writing from Bennington College, where he was recipient of the Lucy Grealy Memorial Scholarship. He was a 2001 fellow at Fishtrap writers’ conference, and a 2007 fellow at the MacDowell Colony. He has been nominated four times for a Pushcart Prize.

Caswell’s new book of travel writing, Getting to Grey Owl: Journeys on Four Continents, will be published by Trinity University Press in 2015. He is the author of two other books of nonfiction: An Inside Passage (University of Nebraska Press), which won the 2008 River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Book Prize; and In the Sun´s House: My Year Teaching on the Navajo Reservation (Trinity University Press). He is the lead editor of a book of nature essays, To Everything on Earth (Texas Tech University Press).

Caswell teaches in the low-residency MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts, and is associate professor of creative writing and literature in the Honors College at Texas Tech University, and lives in Lubbock, Texas.
