NEA Update on Recovery Funds

This was sent to applicants for Recovery funds from the National Endowment for the Arts:

The National Endowment for the Arts is in the process of reviewing the applications that were received for Recovery Act funds, and we are writing to provide you with an update on our progress. In early April we received approximately 2,400 applications requesting support for projects that focus on the preservation of jobs in the arts; those applications are currently being reviewed by panels of experts. The amount of money requested by applicants far exceeds the nearly $30 million available for grants and we will be able to provide grants to only a small portion of the applicant pool.

Given that many worthy applications will not be funded, we want to make you aware that there are three additional avenues of support for NEA’s Recovery Act funding:
–Your state arts agency [note: Wyoming’s first deadline has passed; there may be a second deadline January 15, 2010, depending on funding]–Your regional arts organization [note: WESTAF’s deadline has passed], or
–A designated local arts agency that receives Recovery Act funding. (See the list of state arts agencies and regional arts organizations on our Web site; a list of local arts agencies that receive Recovery Act funding will be available in July.)

In addition, you are encouraged to consider the NEA’s traditional funding opportunities. There are upcoming deadlines for the Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth category on June 11 and the Access to Artistic Excellence category on August 13. The NEA Chairman will make final decisions on Recovery Act funding following the meeting of the National Council on the Arts at the end of June. Applicants will be informed of funding in July. In the meantime, check the “Recovery” section of our Web site for the most up to date information on all aspects of the NEA’s Recovery Act program.
