Redstone Recital and Gallery presents "The UW Connection"

From a Casper College press release:

A pairing of art and music is scheduled for the Casper College RedStone Recital and Gallery Series on Saturday evening, April 26. The event, entitled “The UW Connection,” features University of Wyoming faculty. At 6:30 p.m., an exhibition of paintings and artist’s talk by Visual Arts Chair Ricki Klages will be in the Mildred Zahradnicek Gallery in the Music Building. At 7:30 p.m., the Verismo Trio, featuring music professors Theresa Bogard, piano, Nicole Riner, flutes, and J. Scott Turpen, saxophones, will present a recital in the Wheeler Concert Hall.

“My paintings reflect the influence of the places I have seen, visited, or lived in. Although I have lived predominantly in the American West, the thirst for the inspiration of new places, landscapes and other environments has been constant. I have had the good fortune to live several years in Northern Italy. In addition, I have spent summers and holidays in and around London, and the southwest of England. All of these environments are referenced either directly or more subtly within my paintings,” said Klages.

The Verismo Trio program features newly written works for the group by American composers Jason Barabbas (Los Angeles), Dave Deason (Portland, Ore.), and Ryan Jespersen (Connecticut), as well as an arrangement of a piano quartet created by the Croatian composer Ivan Bozecevic. Additional music will include an arrangement of Debussy’s “Epigraphs Antiques” for two pianos and saxophonist Russell Peterson’s first movement of “Trio.” The Verismo Trio combines original works and arrangements for its instrumentation along with duo and solo works of all combinations, which makes for a widely varied, colorful concert experience that highlights works written since the 20th century.

Verismo Trio was founded in 2010 after Bogard, Riner and Turpen, already active performers and recording artists in their own right, spent a blissful month learning, performing, and recording Jennifer Higdon’s “Dash” under the composer’s tutelage for a collaborative CD of her wind and string chamber music, “Jennifer Higdon: Chamber Music,” released by Albany Records in 2014.

In their short time together, Verismo has toured the Rocky Mountain region, from the remote mountain towns of Wyoming to inner city Denver, introducing new sound concepts and new composers to audiences young and old. During the 2012-2013 season, they served as guest artists at 37° Festival de Musica in Goiania, Brazil as part of their busy touring schedule.

General admission tickets for the RedStone Recital can be purchased online at caspercollege.edu/events/redstone for $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are also available on campus in the Music Building, Room 137, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the evening of the performance. A reception will follow each event.

The concert is the culmination of the first annual Casper College RedStone Recital and Gallery Series. The RedStone Recital and Gallery Series is sponsored in part by the Wyoming Arts Council, Casper College, and the Casper College Foundation.
