Riverton native Tyler Gilmore returns for opening event at CWC Single Reed Celebration

A group of local and regional music professionals perform the original composition of Riverton native Tyler Gilmore Friday, March 14 at Central Wyoming College.

The 7:30 p.m. concert, titled “A Rambling Stretch,” is in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Theatre and is the kick-off event to CWC’s Single Reed Celebration. The multimedia project explores the landscape and people of the Wind River Reservation.

Gilmore, a Riverton High School graduate, is a jazz composer, electronic musician and recording engineer.  He has teamed up with photographer Gary Isaacs to produce a series of photographs that inform and inspire a cycle of musical works for jazz ensemble, said CWC instrumental instructor Jason Ogg. “This work will be performed with the goal of providing an artistic lens through which to view this often misunderstood region.”

The following day, CWC hosts clinics for reed musicians, featuring University of Wyoming faculty Scott Turpen and Bret Pimentel. The final recital is at 4 p.m. and includes Turpen, Pimentel, Ogg, Blake McGee and Zach Tolman. Joining these reed musicians for the Rambling Stretch concert are Kelly Dehnert, Ed Brazeale, Jeff Troxel, Tom Amend and Michael Lange.

Gilmore has recorded two albums with his ensemble Ninth and Lincoln. In addition, he has composed for several projects. He won the 2009 ASCAP/Columbia College Commission in Honor of Hank Jones and won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

His music has been reviewed in DownBeat magazine and performed internationally by groups including Jon Faddis’ Chicago Jazz Ensemble, the New England Conservatory Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, the Playground Ensemble, the Henry Mancini Institute Overture Orchestra and others.

Gilmore grew up in Wyoming, and attended the University of Northern Colorado and the New England Conservatory. He is now based in Brooklyn, N.Y.This event is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
