Sheridan College music instructor Dr. Christian Erickson recently won the 2014 ARTCORE New Music Competition.
His quartet for strings will be the centerpiece of a recital by Christine Dunbar, the principal cellist with the Wyoming Symphony. The premiere is scheduled for April 19 of next year at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Casper.
The dean of arts and humanities at Sheridan College called Erickson an accomplished composer in the professional ranks who’s provided outstanding leadership in their music programs. Erickson teaches courses in music theory, composition and music technology at the college.
According to the college release, ARTCORE is an arts advocacy organization in Casper that sponsors a wide variety of performing arts events. The organization holds an annual competition to find serious composers in the state and give exposure to musical works of merit.
The Wyoming Arts Council believes that experiencing the arts should be accessible for all, including people with mental and/or physical disabilities, older adults, military/veterans, people living in institutions and those who lack access to the arts due to geographic isolation, cultural difference and economic hardship.
