State Museum Family Days event Nov. 2 features Dia de los Muertos activities

From the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne:

The Mexican celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is explored during the next Wyoming State Museum Family Days program held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to Wyoming State Museum Curator of Education Nathan Doerr, “Dia de los Muertos is a day dedicated to remembering those who have departed. As opposed to Halloween, it is a day of celebration filled with rich cultural traditions and colorful folk arts. Celebrating those traditions and arts is a way for us to explore the cultures that are a part of Wyoming’s past and present.”

Visitors are invited to stop by the Museum anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to explore the cultural traditions and folk art of the Day of the Dead. During their visit, participants will celebrate the holiday as they make tissue paper marigolds, create papel picado, and decorate calavera (skull) masks. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family Days is a free program of the Wyoming State Museum that provides children and their families with fun and educational opportunities to explore Wyoming’s natural and cultural resources.  The program is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month, September through May, at the Wyoming State Museum. Each month’s program has a different theme. For more information, contact Doerr at 777-7021.
