The Wyoming State Museum continues the weekly expansion of the Wyoming 125th Anniversary exhibit with a look at the Depression-hit 1930s.
Lasting a full decade, it was the worst economic slump ever experienced by the industrialized countries.
Not everything about the 1930s was bad for Wyoming, though. This week’s highlight is a used trona bit. In 1939, the world’s largest trona deposit was discovered in Sweetwater County. Trona is processed into soda ash which is used in a production of glass, paper, textiles, and detergents. Today, Wyoming produces nearly 100% of the nation’s soda ash.
To further celebrate Wyoming’s contribution to Trona mining, the Trona Trail Historic Mine Byway recently was dedicated in Green River’s Centennial Park.
The Wyoming State Museum is located at 2301 Central Avenue in Cheyenne. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission is free.
