Teton County Library presents UW Eminent Writer-in-Residence Bhanu Kapil on Feb. 12

From the Teton County Public Library in Jackson:

How do you stop writing something that is always on the verge of being written?

That’s one of the questions about the writing experience that author Bhanu Kapil will mull as she reads from her new book, “BAN en BANLIEUE” (Nightboat Books, 2015), when Teton County Library presents Writers at the Library: Bhanu Kapil, Notes for a Novel Never Written on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Ordway Auditorium.

Kapil will also share a little bit about the process of writing through and across the particular history of late 1970s London. Her book, “Ban en Banlieue,” follows a brown (black) girl as she walks home from school in the first moments of a riot in London, in April 1979. Kapil will talk about the experience of writing a hybrid work across poetry, politics and place. She will take questions, any question at all, about writing, practice and craft from the audience.

Kapil is the University of Wyoming’s 2015 Eminent Writer-in-Residence for the Master’s of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing. She is funded through an endowment from the State of Wyoming which was established by the Legislature to attract exceptional faculty to selected programs at the University of Wyoming. Kapil maintains a widely read blog on social incubation, prose experiments, and dogs, called Was Jack Kerouac A Punjabi?

A British writer of Indian origin, Kapil now lives in Colorado where she has taught for many years at Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. This Spring, she is teaching a seminar on monsters at the University of Wyoming. Her newest full-length work, “BAN,” is built from performances in India, the United Kingdom and many cities/verges throughout the U.S.

The program is free and open to the community with support from donations, large and small, to the Teton County Library Foundation.
