The History of the Sheepeaters on Wyo Public Television


On Thursday, December 6, Wyoming Public Television presents “Sheepeaters: Masters of the Mountains” from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the first of a four-part series on Wyoming’s Sheepeaters Indians, also known as the Mountain Shoshone, archaeologist Larry Loendorf visits a sheep jump and tells how these were built and used to trap the Rocky Mountain sheep which were essential to the Sheepeaters for sustenance.

“Gifts of the Mountains”- In the second of the series, Loendorf and archeologist Rich Adams visit a steatite quarry in the foothills on the Wind Rivers to discuss how the Sheepeaters manufactured and fashioned their prized cooking vessels from one of the regions many steatite quarries.

“Life in theMountains” – This third documentary of the Sheepeaters series explores what life in the rugged Yellowstone region was like for the Mountain Shoshone Indian tribe.

“Masters of the Hornbow” – Tom Lucas of Lander reinvents the lost art of making the Sheepeater’s powerful sinew-backed bow.
