The State Museum's upcoming lecutures

Life of prehistoric people living at high altitude is the subject of the Wyoming State Museum’s next lecture, December 13 at 7 p.m., in the Multi-purpose Room.

Titled “Life at 10,800 Feet: Late Prehistoric Alpine Archaeology in Northwest Wyoming,” the Richard Adams lecture will examine the Shoshone Indians who spent their summers at high altitudes in the mountains of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. For more than 1000 years, these mountain-adapted people hunted bighorn sheep, dug abundant root crops, harvested whitebark pine nuts and constructed small villages at altitudes where few people today only visit.

Using vivid images, Adams will show the high mountains that were the preferred summertime destination, rather than a place to be avoided. Adams is a project director with the Office of the Wyoming State Archaeologist.
