Two new exhibitions open May 24 at the University of Wyoming Art Museum: “Cyrus Baldridge: An American Artist in China” and “New Acquisitions: UW Art Museum Collection.”

“Cyrus Baldridge: An American Artist in China” presents a selection of works from the UW Art Museum’s permanent collection that were completed during the artist’s journeys in Asia, where he sketched and painted the people and the landscape. These works are from a pivotal point in Baldridge’s career and highlight his transition from illustration to the use of free, sparse lines to convey his subject.

The exhibition provides the opportunity to see the work of an artist in transition. It will have its premiere at the art museum before becoming available to travel the state through the museum’s Regional Touring Exhibition Service.

“New Acquisitions: UW Art Museum Collection” highlights recent acquisitions to the museum’s collection. On view for the first time, these works represent the museum’s goal to create a comprehensive and significant collection for teaching, research and exhibition.

“The UW Art Museum acquires objects for its collection through donations and purchases, with each object being carefully considered based on existing areas of strength and relevance, and within the context of supporting the University of Wyoming’s academic and cultural missions,” says Susan Moldenhauer, museum director. “As a result, the art museum is able to add significant artwork that ranges from the important art historical work of Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol, to contemporary artists such as Bernar Venet and Betty Hahn.”

Through its Museum as Classroom approach, the UW Art Museum places art at the center of learning for all ages. The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive in Laramie. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free.
