Two University of Wyoming professors and Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing Program faculty members will lead a writing workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Laramie County Public Library in Cheyenne. The event is free and open to the public
UW Department of Philosophy Professor H.L. Hix, and Kate Northrop, Department of English associate professor, will lead the workshop titled “Let’s Talk Texture: Poems that Glitter, Teem, Grow Pale, or Flash and Maybe Itch Then Irritate.” They will give aspiring and experienced writers an opportunity to explore the texture of poems.
Participants will take part in a discussion and complete a writing exercise. Participants also will be encouraged to paint their finished poems on the library’s windows.
Hix, the first director of UW’s MFA in Creative Writing Program, now teaches in both the philosophy department and the MFA program. He is the author of 26 books, including collections of essays, criticism, theory and poetry. His book “Chromatic” was a finalist for the National Book Award.
Hix’s collected poems, “First Fire, Then Birds: Obsessionals 1985-2010,” was published in 2010. His most recent collection is “As Much As, If Not More Than.”
Northrop has been at UW since 2006. She is the author of three collections of poetry: “Clean”; “Things are Disappearing Here,” a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and a finalist for the Academy of American Poets’ James Laughlin Award; and “Back Through Interruption,” which won Kent State University Press’s Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize. Earlier this year, she received the prestigious Jeannette Haien Ballard Writer’s Prize, an annual award for a young writer of proven excellence in poetry or prose.
