The University of Wyoming is hosting its first annual jazz festival Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28. Both days are filled with concerts by high school and middle school jazz groups from around Wyoming. Guest artists from around the country will provide feedback to the performers and conduct clinics with the groups. UW professor and festival organizer Scott Turpen says first and foremost, the festival is about education.

“When the groups leave here, we’ll give them a little thumb drive that’s got HD video of their performance and then two audio recordings of the judges’ comments, plus they get the live comments from the adjudicator on stage.”

Turpen says evening concerts will feature select student groups and the visiting pros, as well as the Wyoming All-State Jazz Choir. All the concerts are free and open to the public. Turpen says his year’s festival has generated so much interest that next year’s UW Jazz Festival is already booked.
