UW Outreach offers doc film course

The origin, development and evolution of American, British and Canadian documentary films is a course offered this fall through the University of Wyoming Outreach School.

Discovering what is good, bad and unfair is the focus of “History of Documentary Film,” offered statewide. It’s part of the Outreach Credit Programs Office and the UW/Casper College Center, both units of the Outreach School.

The documentary course will be delivered through a combination of audio and video conferencing. Students will view 20 complete films and partially screen 10 other documentaries.

In addition to gaining a sense of history and understanding of documentary film theory, participants will acquire new skills for reviewing and critiquing documentary films, says course instructor Mike McElreath, director of the Division of Outreach Technology Services and UW Television.

“Class discussion is emphasized and lectures are minimized,” McElreath says. “Students in the class will never look at documentaries the same way after completing this class.”

McElreath has more than 40 years of film and broadcast television experience. He has written, produced and directed PBS documentaries along with hundreds of hours of public affairs and documentary programming in Oregon and Washington. In 1987, he became a UW adjunct instructor, teaching courses in advanced broadcast production, media management and documentary film history.

The fall semester begins Aug. 27.
