View Outstanding Student Artwork in July at “Artistic Discovery”

View the Wyoming student artwork exhibit “Artistic Discovery” at the Barrett Building, 2301 Central Avenue in Cheyenne. The exhibit is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m-4:30 p.m. during the month of July.

Each year, 25 pieces of outstanding two-dimensional work are chosen by outside jurors at the High School Arts Symposium in Casper. From this body of work, one piece is sent to Washington, D.C., to hang for one year in the hall between Congress and the offices of the Representatives. This year’s Congressional Award is Dresser Top, oil on panel, by Alexandra Eisele of Big Horn High School. The 24 Honorable Mentions are exhibited in the Barrett Building.

Jurors were Jane Lavino from the National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson; David Newell, curator of art at the Wyoming State Museum; and Connie Gibbons, former executive director at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper.

The symposium is a statewide annual event held in April and sponsored by the Wyoming Secondary Art Educators. Each year, more than 70 secondary and middle schools bring artwork to Casper to be exhibited for two days. The exhibit has numbered as many as 4,300 pieces in recent years. During the symposium, students have the opportunity to participate in educational arts activities and hands-on workshops, interview for scholarships and college entrances, view artwork created by their peers, and meet other art students from around the state.

The Congressional Award Honorable Mention exhibit began in 1991. The Three-Dimensional Artwork component began in 2003 as a partner exhibit that honors the exceptional 3-D artwork shown at the symposium. Pieces are chosen yearly by an outside juror who selects work based on technical excellence and originality, while also considering the available pool of work, to create a balanced representation of 3-D exploration happening in art classes. This year’s juror was Richard Bird, art department chair from Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb.
