Wyoming Arts Council announces performing arts fellowship winners

Lawrence Jackson of Laramie and Natalia Duncan of Jackson have been named the winners of the 2013 Wyoming Arts Council performing arts fellowships in dance and theatre performance. They each will receive a $3,000 prize.

Honorable mentions were given to dancers Meleta Buckstaff of Jackson and Rachel Shaw of Laramie.

Judges for the awards were Idaho dancer and author Renee D’Aoust and University of Idaho theatre professor and playwright Robert Caisley.

Jackson is a faculty member in the University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance. He teaches modern, jazz, repertory and partnering technique. His is researching the relationship between sociology and dance. Jackson has studied with many prominent dance professionals, including Donald McKayle, Mary Hinkson and Suzanne Farrell. He was a principal dancer with the internationally renowned Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. His choreographed work recently was performed via UW’s touring program in Carmina Burana.

Natalia Duncan is the artistic director and resident producer at the Off Square Theatre Company in Jackson. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., her career on the stage began at a young age when she traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, performing with a professional children’s dance company. In addition to her work with Off Square, Duncan is an associate producer with Firefly: Theater & Films, a producer for Hole Dance Films, a program of Dancers’ Workshop and a performer with Contemporary Dance Wyoming.

Jackson native Meleta Buckstaff is an artist and dancer.  By day, she works for Dancers’ Workshop. By night, she designs clothing and costumes, makes collages, drawings and jewelry.

Rachel Shaw is a dancer, choreographer, and educator. She is a lecturer at UW and teaches dance technique, Bartenieff Fundamentals, dance composition and dance for the camera.
