Description:

Feike van Dijk
Freelance Percussionist – Improviser - Music Arranger - Drum Facilitator – Vocalist
Born in the Netherlands and growing up in a Dutch and Indonesian - Moluccan community, Feike listened to his “uncles and aunts” expressing themselves through music. During family visits, weddings, birthdays, funerals, church services, etc. Feike watched and learned from this musically-gifted culture.
Starting at the age of 13, Feike learned theoretical basics of drums at the Muziekschool Twenthe in Almelo, the Netherlands. He increased his skills in world hand-percussion with training from renowned percussionists, including professor Nippy Noya at the Saxxion Music Conservatory in Enschede in the Netherlands. Feike then went to London UK, to further develop his understanding of music under Dave Markee, a former band member of Eric Clapton, the Henry Mancini Orchestra, the Who, etc.
Inspired by world-renowned percussionists including Alex Acuna, Cyro Baptista, Trilok Gurtu, Luis Conte & Martin Neil, Feike developed his own style and approach. Congas, udu, djembe, darbuka, caxixi, shekere, cajon & even the traditional drumset are just a few examples of the many percussion instruments he is able to play. Throughout his career, Feike has played in a wide variety of settings and styles including symphony orchestras, jazz quartets, funk-rock bands, gospel groups, bluegrass & country.
Feike has 20 years of freelance experience as a live musician as well as a session musician. He has toured over 35 countries and created a multitude of studio and live recordings with artists and musicians including: Mick Cox (former band member of van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix), Dave Markee, Rita Springer, Bob Fitts, Matt Redman, Holy Fire and Todd Gannovski and Suzy Willis. In Wyoming, he has played with several bands including the Fremont County Symphony Orchestra, Fluffy Buffalo, Chanman Roots Band and Screen Door Porch, just to name a few.
Feike is a REMO endorsed Drum Facilitator. He knows and understands the healing power of music, especially that of rhythm. Beginning early in his music career, while traveling, Feike would find time to facilitate drum circles to create a therapeutic atmosphere introducing joy and healing. Whether he was in inner cities, refugee camps, hospice homes, adult and juvenile delinquent centers, VA Hospitals, children’s hospitals, Native American reservations, or amongst Forbes 500 CEOs, Feike always found a way to orchestrate music out of chaos.
Feike is currently working on several recording projects, he teaches private lessons in world percussion and is a member of the Wyoming based Wyojazz, The Dystopians and Nightfire.
