2016 Wyoming Arts Council Mentoring Projects now under way

Apprentice JG will work with Master Ernie Marsh to improve his bit and spur metal work.

The Wyoming Arts Council announces the 2016 Folk and Traditional Art Mentoring Project Grants.  Projects were selected to support the transmission of Wyoming’s finest traditional and folk art skills through the natural process of in-person, hands-on instruction. The projects run January through October 2016.

The 2016 mentoring grants go to:

Ceremonial/Prayer (sweat lodge) Songs of the Arapaho Tribe: Darrell Lone Bear of Ft. Washakie will teach his son, Tyson Lone Bear, also of Ft. Washakie.

Bighorn Sheep Ram Bow: Governor’s  Arts Award winner Tom Lucas of Dubois will teach his son, Travis Lucas of Lander.

Western Silver Bridle Bit and Spur Making: Ernie Marsh of Lovell will teach to James Guillian of Jeffrey City.

Rawhide Braiding of Western Horse Gear: Jessie Smith of Cora will teach to Jeremy Madole of Pinedale.

This year’s projects represent Wyoming’s rich history and contemporary values and will ensure that our state maintains its unique cultural heritage into the future.
