Just heard about this Aug. 29 reception for a new exhibit by Aaron Wallis, a WAC roster artist and recipient of a 2014 visual arts fellowships:

Opening reception: Friday, August 29, 7-10 p.m.

On exhibit through September, including the Fall Arts Festival

The Rose is open 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. nightly.

The 14 prints in Street Bible 2: Da Return are the latest work in Aaron’s ongoing series of prints entitled The Street Bible that depicts hip-hop artists, drug-dealers, and gang leaders in the context of Christian iconography and the illuminated manuscript. There are 27 prints in the entire series

“I’ve really honed my craft in terms of technically mastering screen printing without any professional equipment,” Wallis said. “All my equipment was built by hand, which reflects the DIY ethos of The Street Bible.”

“The subject matter in recent prints reflects a transition from rappers to drug dealers and gang leaders,” Wallis said. “I feel that depicting actual criminals is a more effective way to address the core issues of class inequality; a racist, for-profit criminal justice system; and the deification of the counter-culture saint.”

Wallis received a 2014 Visual Arts Fellowship from the Wyoming Arts Council, as well as a Storytelling grant from the Center of Wonder.

In addition to the framed prints on exhibit, unframed limited edition prints will also be for sale. Prices range from $300 to $2500.
