Keynote speaker for the WAC CLICK? Conference April 10-11 at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody will be prominent artist and art critic Pedro Velez.
For his participation in the Whitney Biennial 2014, Vélez presented #MonochromaticArtCritics, a wall installation resembling the look and feel of movie posters in which he overlaid quotations by prominent art critics, activists and historians onto images depicting art Schedule world figures (including the authors of the quotations themselves).
The #MonochromaticArtCritics was a direct critique of art journalism, an industry which, according to Vélez, “can’t seem to overcome the old habits of preserving privilege, systemic racism, sexism and provincialism over talent or the cultural needs of a changing audience.”
Vélez’s keynote will be the opening session at 1 p.m. and will address the problems of an old-fashioned art press and reveal some of the editorial barriers he had to overcome as an artist and one of the few Latino critics in the industry.
Velez is also serving as one of the jurors for the 2016 WAC visual arts fellowships. His fellow juror is Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson, the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art at the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Ore.
