Artists in the Environment features Joe Arnold on Sept. 13

Artists in the Environment, sponsored by Grand Teton Association, announces its
September free plein air painting demonstration! Join Laramie resident, Joe Arnold, as
he demonstrates his painting techniques at Cathedral Group Turnout in Grand Teton
National Park on Saturday, September 13 from 9 a.m.-noon. Bring a chair, watch and
ask questions as this gifted artist and mountaineer interprets the Teton mountains, a
motif that has inspired him for years.

After graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Arnold returned to his
home in Laramie, Wyoming where he and his wife maintain a studio, in addition to a
summer cabin in Moran, Wyoming. An avid mountain climber, his paintings feature the
mountaineer’s view. Therefore, the moniker, “plein air artist of thin air,” is well earned as
he is frequently found on high mountain tops doing pastel and oil studies. Arnold has
climbed the mountains of North America, Switzerland, Bolivia and Argentina, always
returning home with art studies and his personal reflections. (Photographs from a very
recent climb of Grand Teton are included here.) Arnold’s concept of the
land is akin to those early 19th century artists, writers and explorers who shared their
visions of the epic and vast world terrain.

The book, Mountaineer’s Dawn, An Artist’s Ascent of the Teton Range, is a collection of
Arnold’s on-site works and studio paintings, arranged by elevation in order to give the
reader specific scenes that one would see in making an ascent in the Tetons. Arnold
says “My paint handling is informed by 30 years of working en situ. In large studio
works, I try to capture the freshness and excitement found in plein air pieces done under
duress, often in extreme conditions and locations.”

Arnold’s works have been featured in numerous national and international exhibits while
he periodically teaches aspiring artists in outdoor and classroom settings.
