Call for artists: Site-specific project for AHA Festival of Progressive Arts
Featured News | April 2, 2015
A call for entries from New Mexico Art in Public Places:
The fifth annual AHA Festival of Progressive Arts will take place on
September 19-20. The
Sunday portion of the festival highlights contemporary performing arts-indie-style music, site-specific dance, and performance art-in the context of an alternative-style visual arts market. The event is held in the Santa Fe Railyard Plaza and is laid out as follows:
- Music performances take place on two stages (under the water tower and near the entrance to the Farmer’s Market building off Paseo de Peralta).
- Between the stages, under the shade structure that runs parallel to the railroad tracks, is a row of 25 art-market-style booths where artists create immersive and participatory environments as well as sell their work.
- From within the crowd, about a dozen dance and other conceptual performances “pop up” to surprise audiences throughout the day.
- About a dozen food and retail vendors are scattered throughout the area between the water tower and the Second Street Brewery patio.
- Saturday events are TBA.
This call to artists is for a site-specific project that will enhance and add to the art, music, and performance format described for the Sunday portion of the festival above.
Applicants should consider the following:
The spirit of the festival favors work that is interdisciplinary, participatory, and of the DIY ethos. While the right project may incorporate none of these qualities, it will be aware of its context among artists who do.While it may be possible to reserve a large open area for the right project, proposals with elements spread throughout the site vs. concentrated in a single area are encouraged.Additionally, the funding guidelines require that at the end of the event a display-quality permanent object be delivered for inclusion in the State of New Mexico’s Public Art collection. The permanent object can be a representation of the larger piece, or it can be a companion either visually or conceptually. Please note: AHA is accepting applications for visual arts booths, music on stage, and pop-up performance at the festival through a separate call at
ahafestival.com.
