Cambodian Genocide Topic of UW Program in Centennial

“The Khmer Rouge Genocide and Cambodia’s Museum of Memory” will be the topic of a University of Wyoming presentation Wednesday, July 8, at the Albany County Public Library Centennial branch.

The “What in the World?” program is free and open to the public. The presentations highlight innovative international research projects.

Nicole Crawford, UW Art Museum collections curator, and Pechet Men, assistant director of Cambodia’s Museum of Memory, will be the speakers. They will discuss work by Crawford and Isadora Helfgott, Department of History associate professor, to remind the world of the horrific genocide that took place in Cambodia.

UW collaborates with Cambodia’s Sleuk Rith Institute, the nation’s foremost organization for commemorating and remembering atrocities committed under the Khmer Rouge. The institute is a leading regional center for genocide studies.

This summer, Men works with the UW Art Museum, where he is developing an exhibition, and the American Heritage Center, where he works with various departments on archival methods and preservation.

The talks are sponsored by the UW Global and Area Studies Program, the Global Studies Excellence Initiative and the Ruth R. Ellbogen Foundation. The series continues Aug. 19 with Roger Coupal, agricultural economist, and Ginger Paige, ecosystem management specialist, with their presentation on “Modeling Sustainable Agriculture Practices in Guatemala.” For more information, contact Jean Garrison at (307) 766-6119 or email garrison@uwyo.edu.
