Classical North Indian music at UW

This is an update on an Oct. 1 post:

Alam Khan (shown in photo) and Javad Butah will perform a full evening concert of classical north Indian music Sunday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Fine Arts Center concert hall.

That morning at 10, they will present a one-hour demonstration/workshop on north Indian music, also in the concert hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

Khan plays the sarod, one of the most popular Hindustani stringed instruments, known for its rich and introspective sound. As the son of famed sarodist Ali Akbar Khan, the younger Khan carries on the traditions of a long line of Indian musicians.

Butah plays the tabla, a set of drums used for performances of classical and popular music throughout the Indian diaspora, says Rod Garnett, UW professor of Music.

The UW Department of Music and the UW Indian Student organization sponsor both events.
