A special event featuring poster projects, an oral presentation and a short interpretive dance for “The Food Project” will be held on Monday, Dec. 7 from 6-8 p.m. in the Jean D. and H.A. (Dave) True, Jr. Atrium at Casper College in Casper.
“The Casper College Food Project has given each discipline on campus the opportunity to talk about food through their own perspective, and, in many cases, raise awareness of food-related issues in our community,” said Cara Rodriguez, Casper College Learning Communities director and English instructor. The event will feature “poster projects from classes across campus showing different perspectives of food through the eyes of different disciplines, a short interpretive dance, and an oral presentation of a plan for continued campus involvement and service in food issues in the community,” Rodriguez added. “The purpose of this ongoing project is to help students see one theme through the eyes of many disciplines, to think critically about the topic, and to create connections across perspectives.”
Rodriguez got the idea for The Food Project while attending the National Learning Community Conference where she met Greg Hinckly. “Greg has had tremendous success with a similar project based around water at Seattle Central College in Seattle, so I decided to try it here. I just figured the more connections our students can make across the disciplines, the better. Hopefully the project will grow and students will start hearing about food in many of their classes and make connections across many perspectives. I’m also hoping that this evolves into community action that impacts the campus and Casper as a whole,” she said. “Let’s face it, when it comes to food, we eat too much of it, we deny ourselves of it, we crave it, and we take it for granted. But what other ways does food affect us? What could we, or should we, know about food that might change the way we think and live?” Rodriguez asked.
The event is free and open to all and will also feature a hors d’oeuvres buffet. The True Atrium is located in the Music Building on the Casper College campus.
