The Wyoming State Museum presents Traveling Trout —a new temporary exhibit displaying the artistic talent of Wyoming youth.

Traveling Trout features a series of three-foot-tall trout sculptures that were decorated by Wyoming high school students as part of a statewide art competition. Offered by the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, with the assistance of the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund and Friess Foundation among others, the competition asked participants to transform plain white fiberglass trout into works of art.

“This project was really exciting because it engaged so many students. The sculptures were created by the whole class rather than an individual student; so, it was a great collaborative process for them to go through,” said Renée Bovée, the administrator of the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund.

Completed pieces were judged on the originality, execution and overall impact of the idea. The winners, and those who received honorable mentions, received monetary prizes for the art programs at their respective schools.

The Traveling Trout exhibit at the Wyoming State Museum will be open January 13, 2014 through September 19, 2014. A public opening reception will be held February 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The Wyoming State Museum is located at 2301 Central Avenue in Cheyenne. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission is free.

The Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources thanks Handle With Care, LLC, from Lander, for generously donating the shipping of these fun but fragile trout from their “home waters” in Jackson to Cheyenne.
